OpenOffice is one of the most preferred open-source office application suite, despite being the best free alternative to Microsoft Office, OpenOffice lacks in terms of speed and full-compatibility with MS-Office formats, But this can be taken care of with Go-OO - A fork of OpenOffice, which promises to be faster and lighter then OpenOffice, still having better compatibility features with other office-suites.
Go-oo supports OpenXML and SVG natively and is capable of importing Microsoft Works, DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX formats out-of-the-box, coupled with excellent VBA, WordPerfect graphics, and EMF rendering capabilities the application offers a lot of compatibility options, sized at only 132.38MB (Windows) the application is available on Windows and Linux platforms.
